iPhone 19: is Apple skipping it?

Two rumors about the same number point in opposite directions. One says Apple will jump straight to iPhone 20. The other says an iPhone 19 already exists inside the company. They are easier to reconcile than they look.

Rumor, not fact. Everything here is reporting and speculation. Apple has announced none of it. Each claim is rated by how good its sourcing is.

The short answer

Official
Nothing. Apple has not announced an iPhone 19, an iPhone 20, or a plan to skip a number.
Rumor A
Apple skips "19" and brands the 2027 flagship iPhone 20 or iPhone XX.Plausible
Rumor B
An iPhone 19 on a base A21 chip is in development.Plausible
Precedent
2017: iPhone 8 and iPhone X launched together. There was never an iPhone 9.

The case for skipping

Apple skips "iPhone 19" and calls the 2027 flagship iPhone 20 (or iPhone XX)

Plausible

The "iPhone 20" label traces to Omdia analyst Heo Moo-yeol, speaking at a Seoul conference in October 2025 and first reported by ETNews. It has stuck ever since. Rumors variably call the device iPhone 20 or iPhone XX. The precedent is 2017, when Apple skipped "iPhone 9" and jumped straight to iPhone X for the 10th anniversary.

Our read: Apple has not announced an iPhone 20 and has not said it will skip the iPhone 19 name. Treat "iPhone 20" as an unofficial working label.

MacRumors: Apple to skip iPhone 19 name ↗

The logic is marketing, not engineering. A phone called iPhone 19 launching in the iPhone's 20th year undersells the occasion. Apple faced the identical problem at ten years and solved it by going from 8 to X. The name “iPhone XX” that appears in some rumors is a direct nod to that.

Jon Prosser has also claimed Apple is skipping 19, in a concept video that mentions the A21. We note it for completeness rather than as corroboration: MacRumors describes his Apple track record as mixed, and Apple is currently suing him over iOS 26 leaks.

The case that an iPhone 19 exists anyway

An "iPhone 19" is also in development, on a base A21 chip

Plausible

Alongside the anniversary models, Apple is reported to have an iPhone 19 in the works running a different A21 chip — likely the base chip rather than the Pro one. That opens the door to a 2017-style split, where iPhone 8 and iPhone X launched as two tiers of the same generation.

Our read: This sits awkwardly with the "Apple skips 19" rumor. Both can be true internally: an engineering designation is not a marketing name.

How both can be true

Look at what happened in 2017. Apple shipped two tiers in one generation: iPhone 8, a conventional update, and iPhone X, the redesign with the anniversary name. The number 9 simply never appeared on a box.

A 2027 version of that would look like this: the curved-glass anniversary models take the iPhone 20 name in September 2027, and the more affordable model — the one reports call “iPhone 19” internally, on the base A21 — arrives in spring 2028 under whatever name marketing picks. It could ship as iPhone 19. It could just as easily ship as the standard iPhone 20, in the way the standard iPhone 18 is following the 18 Pro by six months right now.

That last point is why we would not read too much into the leak. An internal designation is an engineering label. It tells you a product exists, not what will be printed on it.

What is actually next

If you are trying to work out which iPhone to wait for, the number 19 is a distraction. The next mainstream iPhone with real reporting behind it is the standard iPhone 18, expected in spring 2027. After that comes the anniversary iPhone 20 in September 2027.

iPhone 19 FAQ

Will there be an iPhone 19?

Unclear. Omdia analyst Heo Moo-yeol said in October 2025 that Apple would skip the iPhone 19 name for the 20th anniversary. Separately, reports say an iPhone 19 on a base A21 chip is in development. Apple has confirmed neither.

Is Apple skipping the iPhone 19?

Apple has not said so. The rumor is that the 2027 anniversary flagship will be called iPhone 20 or iPhone XX, jumping past 19 the way iPhone X jumped past iPhone 9 in 2017.

Why would Apple skip a number?

To make the anniversary obvious. In 2017 Apple launched iPhone 8 and iPhone X together and never made an iPhone 9, because "X" marked ten years. "iPhone 20" for the 20th anniversary follows the same logic.

When would an iPhone 19 come out?

If it ships under that name at all, the timing follows Apple's staggered schedule: anniversary flagships in September 2027, and the more affordable models of that generation in spring 2028.

What is the difference between iPhone 19 and iPhone 20?

On current reporting, the iPhone 20 name refers to the premium curved-glass anniversary models with the higher-end A21 chip, while the iPhone 19 designation refers to a model on a base A21 chip. That would mirror 2017, when iPhone 8 and iPhone X shared a generation.

Should I wait for the iPhone 19?

There is nothing concrete to wait for yet. No design, feature or price information specific to an iPhone 19 has been reported. The standard iPhone 18, due in spring 2027, is the next mainstream iPhone with real reporting behind it.
